How we check
A wrong figure about a bill or a benefit costs someone money, so nothing here comes from memory, a press round-up or another comparison site.
Where the figures come from
Every figure comes from Ofgem, GOV.UK, the Energy Ombudsman or Citizens Advice, and links to the page it came from. Hover over or tap the source to see the words on that page and the date we read it. The current figures are for 1 October to 31 December 2026, read on 7 October 2026.
Where an official page is out of date or contradicts itself, we use the one that isn’t and say what we found. Where something isn’t published yet, such as this winter’s Warm Home Discount dates, we say so rather than guess.
When we re-check
Every time Ofgem announces a new cap. The next is due by 25 November 2026Source: Ofgem, then by 23 February and by 26 May 2027Source: Ofgem. Help schemes are re-checked at the same time and when GOV.UK announces changes.
What it covers
Households in England, Scotland and Wales. Ofgem regulates Great Britain onlySource: Ofgem, so the price cap doesn’t apply in Northern Ireland, and some help works differently in Scotland: where it does, the page says so.
What we don’t do
- Sell energy, compare live tariffs, or switch you.
- Take money from energy suppliers, or carry advertising.
- Use affiliate links. If that ever changes, any link that earns a commission will be marked as one, and a commission will never decide what we say.
This is general information, not financial advice. For help with your situation, Citizens Advice is free.
